Toulouse takes up a strategic geographical position in South-West France as it is halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Garonne allows the connexion of Toulouse and Bordeaux through a fluvial route. And it is thanks to Pierre-Paul Riquet, inventor and architect, that the Canal du Midi is finally opened to trafic in 1681 after 15 years of tremendous site works.
